Twisted Nose Gin

Distilled at the Winchester Distillery, our small batch gin combines ten botanicals including local watercress to create a spirit that is intense, fragrant and refreshing.

The Romans knew watercress as Nasturtium, meaning “twisted nose”, from which our gin takes its name.

Inspiration

Winchester is at the heart of an area that has been cultivating Watercress since the 18th century - the local chalky earth and pristine, crystal-clear streams create the ideal environment for this incredible herb to thrive.

The peppery oils present in watercress act as a stimulant to the taste buds and an aid to digestion, but we love its tangy flavour too. Our unique watercress-infused gin delivers a complex but finely balanced spirit that mixes superbly with tonic or as a base in other cocktails.

Taste

On drinking, pine notes of Juniper emerge first followed by fresh citrus and deeper spice tones. A sparkle of peppery watercress appears next as the spicy oils build on the tongue, awakening your senses to the more subtle flavours of the remaining botanicals. The finish is long and satisfying with fresh citrus lingering until the following mouthful.

Serve with a good tonic and twist of pink grapefruit for the perfect gin and tonic or with our Hampshire Vermouth for an amazing Martini.

  • Twisted Nose Gin

Carefully sourced ingredients, local and exotic

  • Juniper

    Without Juniper it wouldn’t be gin, and our recipe is no different. We source fine juniper berries, carefully macerate them to start the release of their pine-scented oils.

  • Citrus

    The citrus tones in our gin come from crushed coriander seed and the zest of freshly peeled grapefruit which, we believe, releases richer flavoured oils than either lemon or orange.

  • Spice

    Cassia bark and fennel seed create the spice notes in our gin. We blend these ingredients carefully with each batch to ensure the flavours stay in check without ever dominating the finish.

  • Delicates

    A truly great gin must balance powerful notes with more refined overtones. We include orris and angelica to fuse the flavours, our local Hampshire lavender for subtle floral tones and liquorice root for sweetness.

  • Watercress

    Infused with the other botanicals during distillation, our Hampshire watercress imparts fresh, green herbacious notes and an exciting 'zing' on the tongue that lifts the other flavours creating a distinctively refreshing gin.

Small batches, no compromises

We pride ourselves on the attention to detail that goes into each bottle. Every part of the process is performed by hand with each batch meticulously checked for consistency, quality & strength.

Small Batches

At the Winchester Distillery we do not have the means or indeed the desire to create a warehouse full of homogenous bottles of gin. Our focus is purely on the provenance of our ingredients (locally sourced where we can), meticulous attention to detail in our distillation process and the quality and character of the end product.

We currently make our gin in miniscule batches of only fifty bottles. Every part of our distillation process is performed by hand with our recipe as a guide whilst using our senses to fine-tune each batch to perfection.

Craft Distillation

We distil our gin in traditional copper alquitar stills that have been used in alcohol production for centuries. Invented by the Moors, these pot stills run a slow, even distillation and produce a very fine grade spirit measuring around 85% ABV.

After gently crushing and mixing the botanicals, we place them in our grain spirit and macerate for some time to release their essential oils. We then carefully redistill in our pot still removing the harsh heads and weak tails, keeping only the pure hearts for our gin.

Our recommended serves

Gin and Tonic

Ingredients
  • 50ml Twisted Nose Gin
  • 150ml Fevertree tonic water
  • Ribbon of pink grapefruit peel
  • 3-4 cubes of ice
Method

Place the ice in the glass and add the ribbon of grapefruit peel. Pour over the gin, add the tonic and gently stir. Garnish and serve immediately.

Hampshire Martini

Ingredients
  • 50ml Twisted Nose Gin
  • 10ml Twisted Nose Extra Dry Vermouth
  • Grapefruit Bitters
  • Twist of pink Grapefruit peel
  • 1 Green Olive (optional)
Method

Pour the gin, vermouth and bitters into a mixing glass with ice cubes, stir well and strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a twist of pink grapefruit peel or add the olive, if preferred.
